BIRMINGHAM’S MATT NEAL CLAIMS PODIUM AT HOME TRACK
Birmingham-based Matt Neal produced yet another solid performance for VX Racing today for rounds seven, eight and nine of the 2008 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at Donington Park with one more podium finish.

The 41-year-old claimed his fourth podium of the season at his home track in round seven, following a superb drive from sixth to second place at the wheel of his Vectra VXR.

“It’s great; we’ve scored four podiums in three race weekends now,” said Neal. “The race unfolded quite well for me, we made a few tweaks after qualifying and they worked out well.

“The car had good pace from the start and it was a matter of keeping out of trouble after that. Whilst incidents were happening ahead, I was able to climb up all the way to second!”

The second race of the day proved less lucky for the VX Racing driver. Running third with only five laps to go, despite wet conditions, Neal lost out to team-mate Tom Onslow-Cole and rival Darren Turner (SEAT) before an incident with a Honda Civic led to Neal’s retirement.

Starting the last race of the day in 15th place, Neal raced through the BTCC field to an eventual sixth place finish, collecting five more points.

“We started quite far back in 15th place,” added Neal. “We had a really good race getting up to sixth place. I knew it was unlikely we would get up to a podium position though so concentrated on scoring points.”
